Jersey Tomato Peach Salsa

New Jersey, The Garden State, is known for its tomatoes, peaches and other Jersey Fresh™ produce. NJ has been breeding and growing tomatoes since the 1920's and is famous for the Rutgers and Ramapo tomato varieties. NJ's excellent growing conditions for peaches results in beautiful color and great taste. This recipe combines these fresh flavors for a yummy salsa — perfect for grilled fish or chicken or enjoyed with crudities or chips.

In-Depth Sessions, Wednesday Afternoon, September 16

The Alabama Host Committee has developed a number of In-Depth Sessions (Workshops On The Move) designed to provide hands-on training and detailed information about the subject matter covered by each session. Space for some sessions is limited. Sessions will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Alabama 4-H Youth Development Center

A: The Environmental Science Education Center at the Alabama 4-H Youth Development Center

Environmental Education, Housing and Youth Development

Alabama is proud to have the first gold-certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) environmental education building in the eastern United States. The Environmental Science Education Center, located on the campus of the Alabama 4-H Youth Development Center, offers Alabama school children, 4-H youth, business leaders and others the opportunity to learn about protecting and enhancing the environment. The $7 million facility is constructed of stone, concrete, wood, glass and steel and features 17,500 square feet of interior space covering two floors, along with a very large observation deck nestled in the treetops. Along with two laboratory classrooms, the Center offers interactive display areas featuring land and lake habitats. The Center employs a water catchment system, where water from the roof is stored in a cistern to be used throughout the building for the fire protection sprinkler system and toilets, while also incorporating the latest guidelines in air quality, indoor environment and energy efficiency.

    Alabama 4-H Youth Development Center

    In addition to the Environmental Science Education Center, the tour includes part of the 200 acre 4-H Center property, first developed in 1980, which serves as Alabama's 4-H summer camp facility.

    Aldridge Gardens

    B: Aldridge Botanical Gardens

    Home Grounds and Horticulture

    Aldridge Botanical Gardens is the former Coxe Family Estate, purchased in 1977 by Mr. Eddie Aldridge. A noted horticulturalist and owner of Aldridge Garden Shop and Nurseries, Aldridge caught his first glimpse of the Estate in 1966 when he was hired to plant three magnolias on the property. Aldridge began developing the property as a public garden and, in collaboration with the City of Hoover and the City Council in 1994, the land was formally dedicated and a resolution was passed to ensure the property would remain so in perpetuity. Aldridge Gardens is a beautiful 30 acre site showcasing hydrangeas and picturesque gardens located in the heart of the thriving city of Hoover just outside of Birmingham.

    Birmingham Botanical Gardens is Alabama's largest living museum with more than 10,000 plants in its living collections. Its 67 ½ acres is filled with more than 20 thematic gardens, 30 works of original outdoor sculpture and miles of serene paths. The Gardens also features conservatories, a wildflower garden, two rose gardens, the Southern Living garden, a Japanese Garden with a traditionally crafted tea house, and the largest public horticulture library in the United States.

    Morgan Creek Winery

    D: SESSION FULL - Morgan Creek Winery and Town of Mt. Laurel

    Food and Food Safety, Community and Economic Development

    Morgan Creek Vineyards and Winery bottles approximately 1500 bottles of wine per hour, using 180,000 bottles each year. The lush green vineyard is harvested every September. Morgan Creek wines go through several steps of filtering and inspections before bottling. Enjoy a tour of the winery and bottling procedures, as well as a wine tasting, followed by a stop at the gift shop and a look at the muscadine vineyard.

    Town of Mt. Laurel Our next stop, the Town of Mt. Laurel is a 'non-traditional' traditional neighborhood development with family at its center. Cut into the land with respect for nature, Mt. Laurel offers all the comforts of small town life with the amenities necessary for living in the 21st century. Stroll the tree-lined streets and sidewalks and take a step back in time in all the right ways. You will learn how the town was organized and have a chance to shop in the pedestrian-friendly town center.

    In the heart of the bustling city of Birmingham lies the Culinard Cooking Institute, one of the leaders in culinary arts education. Culinard is committed to offering students the opportunity to earn a superior education in the culinary arts. In this session, you will tour the state-of-the-art kitchens where the students learn their skills.

    Golden Flake Snack Foods Golden Flake Snack Foods originated as Magic City Foods in 1923. Over more than eight decades in business, the idea of two gentlemen and a sack of potatoes has grown to more than 1200 employees and 100 million pounds of potatoes a year. In 1956 the name was changed from Magic City Food Products to Golden Flake, Inc. It was at this time that construction began on the 50 acre Birmingham corporate headquarters and the extensive manufacturing facility. Today, this Birmingham-born snack food company serves a twelve-state market with an extensive product line. During this session you will get to see the production of some of their snacks as well as sample the products.

    Community Development and Housing

    Jones Valley Urban Farm Economics and other factors are causing citizens all over the United States to consider moving into "the city." During this In-Depth Session you will tour Hope VI / Park Place, a mixed income downtown Birmingham neighborhood covering twelve blocks where people are living peacefully and safely. A visit into one of the Hope VI homes, the YMCA serving the neighborhood, and the Jones Valley Urban Farm are all included in this workshop.

    Pepper Place Following the Hope VI portion of the workshop you will go to Pepper Place where Dr. Pepper was once bottled. You will enjoy shopping at this historic structure where you will find everything from specialty stone surfaces to antiques to exciting art work and garden shops.

    This workshop concludes with a trip to the Young and Vann Building where the Auburn University Urban Studio is located. You will meet the staff there and learn how architects and design specialists work with communities to plan sustainable and healthy places to live.

    Young and Vann Building The Young and Vann Building was built in the 1890s and has been renovated into a new Center for Regional Planning and Design, bringing together government entities, civic groups, neighborhood organizations, businesses, and citizens to develop and coordinate plans and programs to enhance neighborhoods, towns, and cities. The building also has exhibits of local artists' work and houses the Auburn University Urban Studio, where Auburn University architectural students form teams to plan, design, and build community projects.

    Innovation DepotInnovation Depot is a business incubation facility and program that focuses on the development of emerging biotechnology/life science, information technology and service businesses and operates in partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Innovation Depot combines the expertise of business incubation professionals with a next-generation facility offering the space and equipment needed to take the business from concept to reality. The 140,000 square foot facility gives the company the room it needs to start and develop people, equipment and products. You will learn about the concepts behind Innovation Depot and how it helps to make businesses a success in Birmingham.

    Pepper Place The Pepper Place complex is a group of seven buildings totaling more than 227,000 square feet. Formerly the Dr. Pepper Syrup Plant and the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company, the buildings have been completely renovated and the complex is considered the design, furniture and arts-related merchandise center of Birmingham.

    Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

    Community Development and Housing

    Birmingham's role in the Civil Rights struggle is well-known and is documented at the Civil Rights Institute in the Civil Rights District in downtown Birmingham.

    16th Street Baptist Church Visit the museum and the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church to gain insight into events, especially those of September 15, 1963 that so deeply affected our nation.

    After visiting these sites you'll drive through a downtown neighborhood, Hope VI / Park Place, where people of various income levels live together safely and peacefully. You will also see the Jones Valley Urban Farm at Hope VI where produce is grown for sale to Birmingham restaurants and to consumers in the Birmingham area.

    Sloss Furnaces

    The final stop for the afternoon is Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark. Sloss is the only twentieth century blast furnace in the U.S. being preserved and interpreted as an historic industrial site. It is an important reminder of the hopes and struggles of the people who worked in the industries that made some men wealthy and Birmingham the "Magic City".
    **Note: Sloss Furnace takes place outdoors. Wear appropriate shoes and be prepared to walk.

Kathy will present a 90-minute session on Managing Fitness, Personal Development, Stress and Time in Challenging Times. Move and stretch while learning how to better manage stress and time in a very creative way. This session helps you loosen up and see stress and time in a whole new way. Kathy is an independent consultant who promotes a healthy lifestyle across Alabama. She is a graduate of UAB with a degree in Criminal Justice and Communications.

    Barb Struempler and Sondra Parmer will present a 90-minute session on Feeding Your Family in Challenging Times, helping participants to get engaged in creative meal planning and food shopping ideas. They will guide you through this interactive and fun workshop providing easy solutions for eating healthy while also spending less money on food and getting more for your money. Dr. Barb Struempler is a Professor / Extension Nutritionist with the Nutrition and Food Science Department of Auburn University. Dr. Sondra Parmer is Project Manager of the Nutrition Education Program of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

    Harris Early Learning Center The Harris Early Learning Center is a state-of-the-art preschool facility for over 200 children ranging in age from six weeks to five years of age. The teaching philosophy of the facility is grounded in the concept of "developmentally appropriate practice" in which children "learn by doing" and are guided by a curriculum designed to capitalize upon knowledge of how young children learn. The facility also maintains a research mission and is designed to maximize opportunities to conduct developmental research on children and their families. The Center is managed by Auburn University and the College of Human Sciences.
