Galaxy Selects Environmental Friendly Convention Center

Carolyn Wissenbach (PA), NEAFCS Liaison to Galaxy Committee

The David L. Lawrence Convention Center (DLCC) is located in the hub of Pittsburgh’s cultural, business and entertainment district. It is the only convention center in the world to receive LEED Gold certification in new construction. For the DLCC to be awarded Gold LEED certification, six building elements stand out: its unique design, the ability to preserve water, the use of a natural air environment, the abundance of daylight, its downtown location and the center’s ability to recycle.

The building was designed to reduce natural resources usage.  A few of the processes implemented to achieve these goals are: the center operates its own grey water reclamation plant; uses fresh air to ventilate and cool the building; purchases recycle products and goods; donates left-over food; uses biodegradable, organic products, including plates, flatware and paper ware and uses environmentally cleaning products.

Pittsburgh was named by National Geographic Traveler as one of the world’s top 20 great places to visit in 2012.  One of the reasons is its unique architecture including the environmentally-smart “green” David L. Lawrence Convention Center. This 1.5 million sq ft facility features 313,000 sq ft of exhibit space, 37 loading docks, 53 meeting rooms and a 31,000 sq ft ballroom.

The Galaxy Committee invites you to come to Pittsburgh and enjoy your stay knowing you are learning and eating in an environmentally safe atmosphere.
