Books for Daycare First

The Books for Daycare First project is underway, as selected by Past-President Sandy McLain for her president's project. Child care centers destroyed on the Mississippi coast and in South Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina are only now to the point of recovery such that owner/directors are able to come back to their respective communities. For many, construction of new centers is merely a dream.

President's Message

Dear NEAFCS Members:

It was great to be with all the affiliate leaders at the JCEP Leadership Workshops this past month. We had great discussions on vital issues facing our association and Extension. I took lots of notes that I will be acting upon during the remainder of my presidency.

One concern that was voiced at every regional association meeting was "why are the exhibits at Annual Session not like they were in the past?" Long-term members remember the days of an exhibit hall filled with companies such as Hoover, Maytag and Procter and Gamble with special discounts for NEAFCS members. Unfortunately, those days are a thing of the past as companies have changed their exhibiting portfolio to include only those venues that generate substantial revenue. Since we are not a buying crowd, but rather an information gathering constituency, companies are choosing not to exhibit. They cannot justify the expense without guaranteed financial payback.

While large companies may be rethinking their exhibit opportunities; newer and smaller companies are searching for a built-in national audience to market their products and services. NEAFCS provides that at our Annual Session.

Here's where you come in. Every day you come in contact with companies that provide resources and services of interest to NEAFCS members. We need you to suggest the names of potential companies and if the company you suggest does exhibit - you get $50! Yes . . . it's that easy.

So . . . get your thinking caps on and start asking companies if they'd be interested in exhibiting in St. Paul in September. Give potential exhibitors our national office number and our national staff will furnish the information. Remember, if they do exhibit you'll get a check for $50.

Here's hoping we recruit many new exhibitors this year.

Until next month,

Carol Schlitt
