This year's Pre-Annual Session board meeting was held September 15 & 16 at the Crowne Plaza Riverfront Hotel in St. Paul, with Carol Schlitt presiding. In addition to all board members presenting their reports, much time was spent orienting ourselves to what would be transpiring during the week of Annual Session.

President's Message
Kathy Dothage (MO), 2007-2008 NEAFCS President
It is my pleasure to share my first eNEAFCS column with the newest NEAFCS Past President Carol Schlitt. Because of Carol's injury on the last day of the 2007 Annual Session, she was unable to deliver her closing remarks. This month's presidential letter provides an alternative stage, so take it away Carol!
Until next month,
Kathy Dothage
Carol Schlitt (IL), Immediate Past President
Dear NEAFCS members,
The following is the speech I was going to give at NEAFCS on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the conclusion of my term as president of NEAFCS. Unfortunately, I was not able to give it due to an unexpected bungee cable accident (you can read the details in this month's Meet Your Board Member article).
Carol Schlitt
I remember vividly attending my first NAEHE Annual Session in Richmond, Virginia in 1979. As a young Extension Advisor - that's what we were called in Illinois - I was very taken by the pomp and pageantry that was part of the whole Annual Session experience and especially the installation of the national board. I remember thinking to myself - that's what I want to do - be an officer and get to wear fancy clothing on a stage!
And here I am, almost 30 years later, on the stage. Maybe not wearing a fancy long dress like they did in 1979, but still with the same awe and feeling of excitement for our association that I had way back then. It's been a long journey to this podium and I'm so very grateful for the opportunity to live my dream by becoming your national president.
I've had a wonderful year traveling the United States representing NEAFCS and it's been an honor to serve with this year's board as we tackled some difficult and controversial issues, always remembering - "What's best for NEAFCS." Together we've made decisions that will shape the course of this association for years to come.
I want to thank my fellow Illinois affiliate members - will you please stand - as you've been wonderfully supportive during this past year. Any time I needed assistance - you were there for me and I thank each and every one of you for believing in me. Two special members - Lois Smith and Martha Winter - have been my rocks - my foundation this year. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My administrators - Dean Dennis Campion and immediate supervisor Dan Nelson have been very supportive, providing everything that I asked - and then some. I've been fortunate to work with very generous and thoughtful people, both at the campus and county level.
I also want to thank the tri-state planning committee for staging one of the best Annual Sessions ever. A big thank you to the board and especially our new Executive Director, Dave Beebe and Executive Assistant, Raquel Navarrette.
Last but certainly not least, I want to thank my husband, Glennon. You have been wonderful through everything this year and I really appreciate your patience and understanding. Without your support I couldn't have done this. I love you sweetie.
It's been a great year. Thank you for making my dream come true!
