Editor's Note

Jeanne Priester is a staunch supporter and Life member of NEAFCS from Extension in Virginia as well as a retired CES/USDA administrator. Now living in Auburn, Alabama, she is well-known to many of our members. Jeanne's nieces notified us that she recently broke her hip and is convalescing in a nearby medical center. Cards and phone calls to Jeanne would be greatly appreciated.

Remembering Past Galaxy Conferences — Memories from Members

As we approach this year's Galaxy III Conference, several of our members have shared their reminiscences of previous Galaxy conferences they attended. If you have never attended a Galaxy conference, make Galaxy III your first. If you have attended before, we hope you will join us again this year!

Saving Your Way to Galaxy III

I would like all NEAFCS members to add this to your list of 2008 New Year's resolutions: "I will save money to attend Galaxy III in Indianapolis".

2008 Award Update

I know many of you are anxiously awaiting the activation of the online award submission form. The form will be activated after all 2008 dues information has been updated. In the meantime, members can begin working on their awards, gathering photos and have everything ready to enter when the link goes "live".

Highlights from Winter Board Meeting

The NEAFCS board met December 12-14, 2007 in Dallas, TX. Meeting in Dallas gave the board their first opportunity to tour the headquarters office and meet all the office staff members at Madeleine Crouch & Co. Not only did we get a chance to become better acquainted with everyone at headquarters office; we also learned more details about the behind-the-scenes work that is involved in managing and supporting a national professional association such as ours.

Meet Your Board Member

Greetings from the great state of Nebraska! I hope you are all keeping warm during these cold winter months. We had a wonderful white Christmas here in the Cornhusker state — which we haven't had in many years and although it is bitter cold at times, it is also quite beautiful in our winter wonderland!

President's Message

Dear NEAFCS Members,

Happy New Year to y'all (my Oklahoma childhood is re-emerging)!

Last month I recapped our accomplishments and successes for 2007. Now it's time to look ahead at 2008 and to the future of NEAFCS.

First on the list is the Galaxy III Conference in Indianapolis. I would like to suggest that one resolution you might make and keep for 2008 would be to fully participate in Galaxy III. To me, fully participating means presenting, experiencing the business of the association, and networking with all Extension colleagues from across the country. Even though this is a Galaxy year, as NEAFCS members we will be handling the business of our organization and honoring our members who have done excellent work throughout the year. Early bird registration is $395 and will be available online April 15. Although there are several hotels with room blocks for the Galaxy conference, our designated hotel is the Westin; so you may want to make your room reservations early. The functions specific to NEAFCS will be held at the Westin, with large group functions at the nearby conference center. The hotels and conference center are conveniently connected by skywalks.

The second resolution I would like for you to consider is to become more actively involved in your association. This is an exciting time for us, because we will celebrate our 75th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary in 2009 and preparations are in full swing! We are studying Annual Session and considering changes and adaptations that might be implemented. We have drafted a new strategic plan. It is personally very exciting to me to lead our hard working, talented board in continuing the excellent work of previous boards. NEAFCS is comprised of individuals with a wide variety of skills. Please consider sharing these skills with your association. There are many opportunities: state affiliate officers, Annual Session committee members, association committees and subcommittees, reviewers for NEAFCS Journal articles, authors for eNEAFCS e-newsletter articles, national board membership . . . and more!

Take care and remember the daisies! I am really looking forward to seeing some of you at the upcoming JCEP Regional Leadership Workshops in Orlando and San Diego. Until next month, take care and remember the daisies!

Kathy
