Last week was my first time to visit Indianapolis. I can't wait to return in September for Galaxy and see much more! For the next several issues of E-news, we'll survey various facets of this vibrant and interesting destination. This month, one of everyone's favorite aspects . . . dining! As you're reading, consider what options might be fun to explore for your States Night Out event or other special evening on the town.

There has been a recent history of NEAFCS leadership with difficult names to pronounce. (Not the least of whom is our president, Kathy Dothage.) So it is by virtue of my difficult last name that I claim part in the leadership team!

President's Message
Kathy Dothage (MO), 2007-2008 NEAFCS President
Dear Member,
The last few months have been busy with lots of association travel, including the Public Issues Leadership Development Conference (PILD) and the Children, Youth and Families at Risk Conference. Traveling to conferences such as these gives me an opportunity to meet and visit with NEAFCS members from all parts of the country. Both of these conferences were outstanding and I applaud those who served diligently on the planning committees. While in Washington, D.C. I recalled that it had been over ten years since I first participated in the PILD Conference as state affiliate president from Missouri. I had forgotten how invigorating it can be to meet with a group of people (both Extension professionals and volunteers) who are interested in, excited about and concerned for Extension. I hope you will consider participating in the 2009 PILD Conference-you will not be disappointed in the experience. It's not too early to plan ahead; and remember, NEAFCS awards $150 scholarships to thirty (30) members to help defray your costs.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: The deadline for Galaxy III Conference "Early Bird" registration is quickly approaching--JUNE 15. Go to the NEAFCS website to register for the Galaxy III Conference. You will find all the details listed. Your national board just returned from Indianapolis, where we held our Mid Year/Spring Board meeting. We were able to tour The Westin Hotel in downtown Indianapolis, which is our headquarters hotel. It is a beautiful facility and the staff is very responsive, pleasant and looking forward to seeing us in September. There are numerous attractions within walking distance and if the weather is not cooperating (although I'm sure it will be a gorgeous fall week) there are skywalks connecting the hotel, conference center and other businesses. If you are planning to attend Galaxy III, why not encourage a coworker to join you? If you have not planned to participate, please reconsider. It is sure to be a great conference with a variety of opportunities for professional development and networking.
Don't forget . . . we are currently accepting registrations for our NEAFCS-sponsored pre-conference workshops at Galaxy III. Remember, your registration for the Galaxy III Conference is separate from the pre-conference workshops, and you may register for the one of your choice at the NEAFCS website. We can accept participants up to the day of the workshop, but I'd advise you not to wait that long because seating is limited! These workshops are an excellent opportunity to participate in an in-depth professional development session at a reasonable cost.
I hope you're enjoying the May sunshine. In between all my travels and many spring showers, we finally got our garden "in", with lettuce, spinach, radishes, beets, onions and tomatoes planted all at once!
I look forward to visiting with many of you in Indy this September. Take care and remember the daisies!
Until next month,
Kathy
