The NEAFCS Member Resources committee is providing sample evaluation tools as a resource for members who would like to gain new ideas and insight on ways by which they can demonstrate program outcomes and impacts. The tools are available in the Members Only section of the NEAFCS website and cover various subject areas such as food safety, financial/money management, community development, etc. Also, a resource is included that provides a description of each evaluation tool along with a suggested process for administering the tool and analyzing the results.

Plans for the 2009 Public Issues Leadership Development Conference (PILD), which will take place on April 27-29, are beginning to take shape. NEAFCS is committed to making it possible for members to attend the PILD conference by offering thirty $150 scholarships on a one-per-state basis to help support member attendance. If you have never attended, this would be a great year to do so. If you are a past attendee, evaluations show that attendees benefit even more from a second or third trip.

Kathleen Olson (MN), NEAFCS Secretary
I am excited to serve as your Secretary and be part of the NEAFCS board. As well as being responsible for the minutes and records of our association, I will be busy editing the newsletter along with our national office. Serving as a co-liaison for the St. Paul Annual Session in 2007 got me interested in serving on the board.

President's Message
Judith Breland (MS), 2008-2009 NEAFCS President
Greetings NEAFCS members!
September 18 marked the annual leadership change for our association. At our Annual Session during Galaxy III in Indianapolis, I became your President for 2008-2009. Thank you very much for the confidence you place in me as you allow me to serve the association.
You will undoubtedly enjoy reading and reliving the Annual Session highlights in your 2008 issue of the Communiqué, which is currently in production.
My pledge to you is that I am listening to the recommendations of the Ad-hoc Annual Session Committee that began at the Annual Session in 2007 and was reported to the association in ten recommendations during the 2008 Annual Business Meeting. I ask that you read that white paper from the committee, chaired by Carol Schlitt, Past President.
This paper presents fiscal, programmatic, and organization recommendations. When the affiliate presidents and presidents-elect gather at the JCEP regional meetings in February, we will examine those issues; look at progress already made as planning began for the 2009 meeting last year; and determine strategies to connect talented members to meet our challenges and dreams.
Speaking of connecting talented members, please go online today and sign up for one or more of the subcommittees so you can share your talents with others and with the association. Applications are requested by December 31.
Our organization provides opportunity in its structure by having a president-elect, president, and immediate past president serve on the executive board. This structure provides a continuity as we learn, guide, and mentor over the tenure of office. Our board leadership brings different ideas, perspectives and styles together through the sharing of thoughts, insights, talents, and commitment. We ask the same of members, just like you who elected us as a team of officers. We cannot do it alone. We are in this together.
I expect all of you have been to training where you were asked to visualize. For some, it seemed a bit crazy to be told, "In your mind, go find that pleasant place where you can relax and release the tensions of your day." With eyes closed, you pictured that meadow, stream, mountain top view, or whatever scene brought you to calm. I ask that you pause for a few minutes and go to that peaceful place. Once there, let your mind wander as you think of the possibilities for servant leadership within NEAFCS. Yes, we practice servant leadership every day as we look to the needs of our respective communities of responsibility, helping individuals and families find the resources they need to make realistic decisions.
During this year, I ask that you join me in reaching for the stars. As Anatole France said, "To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe". Together we can set our sights on the stars.
Until next month . . .
Judy
