President's Message
Judith Breland (MS), 2008-2009 NEAFCS President
In Alice in Wonderland, there is a passage:
Alice came to the fork in the road.
"Which road do I take?" she asked.
"Where do you want to go?" responded the Cheshire cat.
"I don't know," Alice answered.
"Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."
Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Which road does NEAFCS take?
Regional meetings provide a forum to talk about "where we are going". If we don't know where we are going, we won't go anywhere. At these meetings, we emphasized our budget situation and looked for options to help the national and affiliate chapters as levels of our organization struggle with budget constraints.
What are we going to do? The beauty of our Association is that the organization is us. What happens is not a Board decision; it is a decision reached through discussion and consultation with Affiliate representation, which includes opportunity for any member to raise questions or join the discussion through email, phone, or letter.
We discussed ways to make our organization more sustainable. One of the concerns expressed was some affiliate chapters will not have their state meeting until late summer or fall so it is not easy to communicate with the membership. I would challenge you to look at technology available in your state. When we work in the written word, it means we need to express ourselves succinctly and clearly. It takes time, and we wonder if an email was opened or read, particularly if we receive no reply. We discovered we have capacities to go well beyond email in many of our states. I encouraged state presidents to utilize all means of communication available through each state and have discussion with the membership.
At the Regional Meetings, we discussed options. We know that we can make budget reductions, but those reductions are ideally made in ways that sustain member services and professional development opportunities. We also know we must look at ways to increase revenue. Let's look at some "what ifs":
- What if we continue holding two Regional meetings for JCEP, or even consolidate to one meeting? While that is a decision for JCEP, each Association has input into the decision through their Board representatives. How would that impact the NEAFCS budget and the overall participation in the Regional meeting? Would the President and President-elect of the Association be the ones to conduct the Association part of the Regional meeting?
- What if NEAFCS put governance for Presidents and/or President-elects into the Annual Session? Would each affiliate send one or two representatives to the JCEP Regional meeting without reimbursement for professional development? When we look at the budget, the cost of the Regional meeting for 2009 (includes reimbursement of registration fees and travel), represents 66% of the 2009 operating budget deficit. That is a fact, not a judgment on whether or not the cost is in the best interest of the Association. We need to decide if that is the best use of our resources. How would a difference in participation of NEAFCS at the JCEP meeting impact JCEP? If a day of governance was added to the Annual Session, could some reimbursement for the extra time be provided?
- What if ways to increase revenue were available? One option discussed at the Regional meeting was the production of a cookbook/resource book. A company representative has developed a proposal and affiliate presidents will bring information back to their state chapters. The timeline is short, and the proposal can benefit both state and national budgets. However, it must be an Association project with everyone participating.
- What if also includes the option to raise dues. This has not been a popular option, but must be included in the mix.
- What if includes raising registration fees for Annual Session. The policies limit the amount of increase in registration each year.
- What if includes the option of offering webinars at a low cost, increasing the participation of exhibitors, and offering pre-conference sessions.
Your Board and state officers need your participation in the decisions we make. Please listen as your Association Presidents provide feedback to you, and ask if you have questions. We all teach that there are no dumb questions. To keep NEAFCS finances viable and sustainable, all of us must make critical decisions about the road ahead.
Until next month,
Judy
