Meet your Board Member

I have always been active in NEAFCS. In my first year working with Extension, the Annual Session was held in Hawaii. Of course we were hooked. Tim and I have attended 14 meetings since then, and now I am so excited about having a part in planning our own Annual Session here in Alabama!

President's Message

Judith Breland

Greetings!

Spring is a time for renewal. I know that for some, spring is coming in torrents of rain, freezing weather, snow, very little sunshine, and late frosts, regardless of the date on the calendar! Down South, Easter represents the beginning of spring traditions – you plant your garden on Good Friday, change your shoes from dark to light, swap clothes from winter to summer, and welcome the promise of a new season.

As we look forward to our 75th Annual Session in Birmingham, we are all experiencing changes in our profession that seem to have accelerated beyond any other time we have known. We have been told to think outside-the-box. We are crafting patterns for our future. Your National Board is doing that. We are welcoming a new season in the way we do business. One of the items that is off the table for the Board at this point is a dues increase. Your association relies on dues and Annual Session registration fees to fund its operation. This year, we are making an effort to get as much participation as possible at the 75th anniversary Annual Session. In visiting with some of you, there is a need to lock in travel plans early this year. In an effort to help our Members gain approval and assistance, we are pulling forward the Early-Bird registration period for Annual Session by nearly a month, to April 20.

The Board voted to proceed with the resource/cookbook fundraising project. For your association to have funds available to maintain and even expand Member services, including programming, we needed to look at other sources of income besides dues and Annual Session registration fees. The quality of the completed book will be high, even though there is a challenge of a short timeline to create and publish this project. Debra Cotterill, Treasurer, is heading up the effort. If you want to be included in a committee to help us move this project forward, contact Debra immediately by e-mail. Debra has contributed an article with more information about the project in this month's issue.

Your association Board is also considering alternatives to a face-to-face mid-year Board meeting in May this year, as a means of saving the cost of Board travel. Your Board has taken to heart the need for operating the budget in the black, and is exploring using technology for the meeting. Officers are looking closely at the 2010 budget preparation that will be presented to voting delegates at the 2009 Annual Business Meeting in Birmingham.

Kathy Dothage, Immediate Past-President, is heading the search for officers to run for vacancies on the Board as we approach the end of the term for President-elect, Vice President for Awards, Vice President for Public Affairs, Treasurer, and Regional Directors for the Southern and Central Regions. If you have an interest, contact Kathy on the status of nominations. While the deadline was April 1, if you are interested, talk with Kathy immediately.

And while most national awards are currently well underway in the judging process, the Member Resources Diversity Subcommittee has an upcoming deadline of May 8 for NEAFCS members to apply for the Diversity Subcommittee Awards Certificate. See the article in this month's e-newsletter for application details.

When the NEAFCS Past President finishes her three-year stint on the JCEP Board, the Past Presidents of all the associations meet one final time and have a deliberative discussion, typically around a book. In 2009, the book was The Oz Principal. It is not a new book, but is very pertinent in our present climate.

In the book, the authors say,

" . . . a thin line separates success from failure. Below the line lies excuse making, blaming others, confusion, and an attitude of helplessness, while above the line we find a sense of reality, ownership, commitment, solutions to problems, and determined action. People find themselves stuck in a victim cycle, such as: cover your tail, finger pointing, ignore/deny, it's not my job, confusion/tell me what to do, wait and see. Only by moving 'above the line' to 'steps of accountability' can organizations become powerful again. The steps to accountability are: see it, own it, solve it, and do it.

. . . an attitude of accountability lies at the core of any effort to improve quality, satisfy customers, empower people, build teams, create new products, maximize effectiveness, and get results."

Reach for the stars!

Let me assure you, your Board has an attitude of accountability. We look forward to having you as our partner as we move toward the Annual Session, as we develop the resource/cookbook project, and as we work together to advance our communication ability with our members, our affiliate leadership, and our larger public.

Until next month,

Judy
