President's Message
Judith Breland (MS), 2008-2009 NEAFCS President
"Summertime, and the livin' is easy, fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high!" It may not be cotton in your neck of the woods, but we are in the growing season. Not just with Mother Nature, but also with our Association. Between the song and the season, you can start practicing your Southern drawl for "Birm-in-ha-am" (at least 4 syllables, folks).
It is exciting to see the Annual Session program take shape, as presenters with relevant concurrent sessions and showcases of excellence are slotted into times, as award winners are announced, and as general sessions and keynote speakers and celebration times are scheduled. It seems we just asked you to submit proposals and award applications; now, selections are made and the conference program book coming together. The Exhibits Committee, under the leadership of Debbie Simmons-Gray, has secured the HUD "Home Health and Safety Pavilion" exhibit — that's right, there will be a scaled-down house inside the exhibit area to promote healthy and safe homes for children and families, as well as offering suggestions for sustainability and going green. Two exceptional pre-conference workshops have been created for those of you who want to expand your professional development experience even more.
Early-bird registration is open, now through July 25 - so register early and save $50. You won't want to miss the very special 75th anniversary Annual Session being celebrated in Birmingham this year!
Presidents and Presidents-elect provided a well thought-out list of suggestions for the Board during the JCEP Regional Meetings, which were compiled and presented to the Board. Issues are being addressed. One of the commitments made was to produce the NEAFCS resource / cookbook as a fund-raiser for Affiliates and the National Association. Talk about "movin' along"! In the true spirit of FCS Extension agents, the Living Well reference book is taking shape as we speak. Recipes, state page information, and resource information for families are coming together. Hats off to the Resource Book Committee, chaired by Debra Cotterill, Treasurer, with oversight from our Regional Directors, Judy Hetterman, Chris Koehler, Amy Peterson, Carolyn Wissenbach, and from VP for Member Resources, Judy Kovach. Our members stepped up, volunteered for a topic area, and the book is taking form! Yes, it is a real can-do community effort. Deadlines are being met and a very tight schedule is working. Debra is singing the praise of all the members who have engaged in the project.
Another project is State Histories. Cheryle Jones Syracuse, Past President and Historian, keeps bringin' good news of how much information we are accumulating and what magical stories of successes are being compiled. Check out the histories in Archives section of the NEAFCS website. If yours isn't there yet — take action, or strike while the iron is hot and get your state's history up to date. And, we have found a space at the Annual Session convention center for visitin'! You'll hear more about that soon.
This is the time of the year when your Board makes budget recommendations for the coming year. The JCEP Board voted to have one Regional Leadership Training Meeting in Nashville in 2010. The Board is going to have to look closely at the cost associated with that JCEP meeting and determine how the cost of leadership training for the Presidents / Presidents-elect is going to be offered because of the amount it represents in the budget.
Committees need to look at their needs and present those to the Vice Presidents, so that we have an effective, efficient budget that allows us to meet the goals we set for our Association in our plans of work.
Your Board has made some hard choices this year, and will continue to do so. We pledged to be fiscally responsive to the membership. In May, the Mid-Year Board meeting was held using Adobe Connect web conferencing technology, rather than a face-to-face meeting. We are continuing to utilize technology to be more effective in managing funds. We on the Board, like you, live in smaller communities and see the financial stress of our families, our cities, our state legislatures, and our universities. We know that changes are taking place in structures for our universities. We recognize that change is going to have to take place in how we work in our Association. Each of you has gifts. We need to look at possibilities for our Association and determine how we can apply our gifts and talents to move our Association forward. Together, we can!
Until next month,
Judy
