One of the exciting pre-conference workshops being offered in Portland, Maine on September 20th is "Raising Your Entrepreneurial Spirit." Reflecting on one of the goals of our Annual Session, "Experience Maine's unique entrepreneurial spirit, resources and history", Michelle Neujahr of Organizational Renovation Company, three Extension Professors from Maine and Vermont and three home-based business owners share what this spirit is about.

Communicating the many benefits of building your Do It Yourself (DIY) baking and food skills is not a tough sell in 2010. Increasingly, people "get" why DIY food skills are valuable to healthy lifestyles, relationships, personal economics and the environment. But that doesn't mean they instantly know how to prepare food at home.

The Board of the Joint Council of Extension Professionals is seeking applicants for the position of Galaxy IV Conference Chair and Vice Chair. Applications are due by May 21, 2010.

Affiliate representatives received marketing and programming information at the JCEP Leadership Training meeting and via a recorded web conference, now available online. Affiliates and individual members are reporting successes from magazine articles, newspaper stories, and counter top displays.

The Awards and Recognition Sponsorship and Support subcommittee is always looking for suggestions for new awards sponsors. I also encourage members to think creatively about how they might get involved in helping sponsor an award.

It is always a good strategy to keep current by attending appropriate national conferences. The collective energy at professional development conferences, such as NEAFCS' Annual Session, can help you to maintain knowledge, pick up on new trends and practices, and to refresh professional friendships.

President's Message

Dear Members,
Spring is definitely in the air in Northern Indiana. For the last several days we have had sunshine, blue skies, and warmer temperatures and I am hearing many spring sounds. One of the most interesting spring happenings is the pair of bluebirds that have been trying to move into our home. Our neighbors have been feeding them year round and it has been a joy to watch the brilliant blue against the white snow. If you are wondering, yes, we are now feeding dried meal worms to blue birds too. This is one way I invest in myself to enjoy what nature offers each season, every day!
We are all living in fast-paced times and working with many changes that present both opportunities and challenges in our personal and professional lives. I encourage you to be proactive by being a leader who challenges people to live in the present and look to the future. You must relay to your clients that the impact of the Family and Consumer Sciences work you do affects lives on a daily basis as well as long term. I would appreciate receiving by e-mail, samples of your elevator speech and what you use to tell your Family and Consumer Sciences story.
Okay members, I was disappointed that not one of you looked in our Living Well, More Than a Cookbook for a recipe with cherries in it. I did have a prize for someone, so I am sending another challenge. Let's see, March is a month for spring recipes. I learned many life lessons raising a flock of sheep, so the first one of you who emails me that there either are or are not lamb recipes in the book will receive a prize.
NEAFCS is also preparing impact statements that will help promote our profession and our Association to our stakeholders and partners. We are gathering information from all the Affiliates to write these impact statements that will be shared at the PILD Conference in April and also at the Federal level. I encourage you to learn more about the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). The following topics come from the NIFA program areas:
- Global Food Security and Hunger
- Food Safety
- Childhood Obesity
- Climate Change
- Sustainable Energy
Now is also the time where I remind you about your personal financial investment in your self, of planning and saving money for your attendance at our 2010 Annual Session in Portland, Maine. The Board and the Annual Session Host committee are hard at work designing very special educational opportunities including a Welcome/Friendship experience on the beautiful Atlantic waters off the Maine coastline.

And remember this quote from Henry James, both when dealing with others and dealing with yourself: "Three things in human life are important. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. And the third is to be kind."
