Why would you like to be a candidate for this office? I would like to be a candidate for President-Elect because I believe in what NEAFCS provides its members, I want to give back to NEAFCS for all I have learned across my experiences with the organization, and I have the skills to effectively lead as President-Elect, and the roles that follow.  Like many others, I was overwhelmed as a new NEAFCS member, not fully understanding what the organization is all about and totally confused about Annual Session. I had great mentors, though, who fostered my curiosity, believed in my leadership skills, and supported my risk-taking as I attended Annual Sessions and explored leadership opportunities at the affiliate level. My success at the state affiliate level led to my interest in the Central Region Director role. I loved being Central Region Director! I learned so much about how different states organize their affiliates, I learned a wide variety of new communication strategies, and I even learned how to travel by air on my own! I was so motivated after such a positive Central Region Director experience that I took a huge risk and ran for NEAFCS President-elect. That proved not to be my time, and I learned a lot about myself in the process – especially how to be resilient when faced with setbacks. I pursued the role of National Secretary the following year, a position that has allowed me to utilize many of my strengths while learning much more about NEAFCS, including our organizational guidelines and committee work. Serving in two different board positions has helped me experience a wider range of board responsibilities as well as different group dynamics as board members shift each year. My expanded leadership opportunities with NEAFCS have supported and paralleled increased responsibilities in my Extension career, including a shift from a regional educator to one serving the entire state of Iowa. Growth often requires discomfort, and NEAFCS has provided a safe and supportive environment for me to take risks that have brought about both personal and professional growth. The next evolution of that growth is running again for President-elect. The knowledge I have developed over the last several years, coupled with my skills in communication, facilitation, and mentorship, provide a strong foundation for me to serve our membership in the President roles. I owe it to myself, and the friends, family, mentors, and colleagues who have believed in me over the years, to not back down from this huge opportunity to lead NEAFCS and explore new avenues of growth for myself and the organization.

If you were elected, what would be your top priority/goal for your term? When trying to organize my thoughts around this question, the quote by Pete Hoekstra came to mind: Real leadership is leaders recognizing that they serve the people that they lead. The work of Extension, and as a result, our NEAFCS organization, has experienced many changes in the last few years. It would be self-serving and nearsighted of me to identify goals I want to achieve in the president roles, not knowing what the priorities of our memberships will be 6-18 months from now. However, I can speak to my broad priorities for NEAFCS and personal goals I have for the positions of President-elect, President, and Immediate Past President.

NEAFCS Goals: My goals for NEAFCS would continue to reflect the strategic plan established in 2024. Much time and effort went into identifying priorities, and moving those priorities forward should be the focus of our leadership. With that said, staying flexible and responsive is equally important. Recent NEAFCS leaders have kept their fingers on the pulse of family and consumer sciences across the country and have responded quickly with compassion and support. My hope is to be a leader who can do the same. A major responsibility of the NEAFCS President is leading our national executive board, and a priority of mine would be leading this group of dedicated members with both heart and efficiency. If elected, I have ideas for how to individually support board officers as they serve membership throughout the year. Also, during executive board meetings, honoring board officers’ time, talents, perspectives and leadership skills would be key to my leadership approach.

Personal Goals: If elected as President-elect, my goals would be to stay true to who I am while growing in new and unexpected ways. I am a thoughtful, kind, respectful, energetic and dependable professional who appreciates one-on-one conversations and creating a sense of belonging with all. I have skills in facilitation, consensus building, adult education, and mentorship that I will utilize in the President roles. Leading our organization takes a growth mindset and a deep commitment to collaboration. I have learned much along my journey as an NEAFCS member, and my goal as NEAFC President would be to continue developing my leadership skills to the benefit of both NEAFCS and broader Extension career.

Why would you like to be a candidate for this office? Family and Consumer Sciences has never been more essential than it is today. Across the nation, families are navigating complex challenges related to financial stability, housing, health, workforce readiness, and youth development. In these moments of change and uncertainty, our profession has a unique responsibility and opportunity to deliver trusted, research-based education that strengthens individuals, families, and communities. I am seeking to serve as NEAFCS President-Elect because I believe deeply in the transformative impact of our work and the powerful role NEAFCS plays in advancing the profession. NEAFCS represents a national network of dedicated professionals who translate research into meaningful, practical solutions for everyday life. Our members are educators, innovators, and leaders who bring the mission of Cooperative Extension to communities across the country. As President-Elect, I would work collaboratively with the National Board, state affiliates, members, and life members to strengthen this network, elevate the visibility of Family and Consumer Sciences, and ensure that our organization continues to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. My vision for NEAFCS centers on three priorities: (1) empowering members; (2) expanding our professional influence; and (3) strengthening the future of Family and Consumer Sciences. This includes supporting leadership development at every level of the organization, encouraging innovative program delivery and scholarship, and building strategic partnerships that amplify the impact of our work nationwide. By fostering collaboration, professional growth, and shared purpose, we can ensure that NEAFCS remains a dynamic organization that equips members to meet emerging needs in their communities. Continuing to serve our association beyond my Vice-Presidential term would be an immense honor, and I would approach the associated duties with profound reverence. I am committed to listening to our members, supporting their professional aspirations, and helping position NEAFCS as a leading voice for Family and Consumer Sciences within the broader Extension and educational communities. Together, we can continue to build an organization that not only supports its members but also strengthens the lives of the families and individuals we serve. The NEAFCS Creed reminds us to “always be willing to accept the challenges of the changing times.” I believe those words capture the spirit of our profession. With a forward-looking vision and a commitment to collaboration, I would be honored to serve NEAFCS as your next President-Elect and to help guide our association as we continue to advance the impact, relevance, and leadership of Family and Consumer Sciences nationwide.

If you were elected, what would be your top priority/goal for your term? One of the most meaningful aspects of NEAFCS for me has been the family I have found within this organization. Throughout my involvement, I have been inspired by the dedication, wisdom, and generosity of colleagues who devote their time and talents to strengthening our profession. I have had countless moments that reaffirm the impact of our community including an unexpected encounter during a layover at an airport when a fellow member recognized me and shared how much NEAFCS meant to them. Moments like that remind me that our organization is more than a professional association; it is a network of passionate professionals who support one another while making a difference in the lives of families and communities across the country. If elected, my top priority would be to strengthen and sustain the people-centered culture that makes NEAFCS so special while positioning our organization for the future. This begins with a strong focus on membership engagement and retention. Our members are our greatest asset, and ensuring that individuals feel connected, valued, and supported is essential to the continued success of our association. I would work to expand opportunities for members to engage with national leadership, increase accessibility and transparency with the board, and create meaningful spaces where members can share ideas, collaborate, and contribute to the direction of the organization. A second priority would be to increase the visibility and recognition of NEAFCS and the Family and Consumer Sciences profession. Through strategic marketing and branding, we must highlight the tremendous work being done by our members in communities nationwide. By strengthening our external communications and partnerships, we can elevate awareness of the essential role FCS professionals play in addressing critical issues such as financial stability, nutrition, health and wellness, youth development, and community resilience. Equally important is ensuring continuity and long-term strategic alignment within the organization. Rather than shifting priorities from year to year, I believe NEAFCS benefits most when leadership works collaboratively across presidential terms. I would prioritize working closely with past, current and ‘future presidents in training’ to maintain momentum toward long-term goals while ensuring that initiatives remain sustainable and aligned with the association’s mission. To support the long-term vitality of NEAFCS, I would also focus on succession planning and leadership development. Identifying, mentoring, and preparing future leaders is critical to maintaining a strong talent pipeline within our association. By investing in emerging leaders and creating intentional pathways for professional growth, we can ensure that NEAFCS remains vibrant and well-positioned for years to come. Finally, as our profession navigates rapid technological change, including the integration of artificial intelligence and digital education platforms, NEAFCS must continue to evolve. I would prioritize providing members with resources, training, and professional development opportunities that help them adapt to new technologies while maintaining the research-based integrity that defines Extension education. Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that NEAFCS continues to deliver meaningful, value-driven experiences for its members moving beyond promised value to clearly delivered value through networking, education, professional development, and leadership opportunities. By strengthening connections among members, elevating the visibility of our work, and preparing for the future, we can continue building an organization that reflects the dedication and passion of the people who make NEAFCS truly extraordinary.

Why would you like to be a candidate for this office?  I am seeking the nomination for the office of Secretary for two primary reasons. First, I want to show my peers that national roles are possible for anyone, hoping to see more of us, especially from my affiliate, stepping into leadership roles. Second, I believe that clear, inclusive communication is the foundation of a strong professional association. My involvement with professional organizations began in college as a student member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly American Dietetic Association). Since then, I have understood that these associations are essential tools for mutual learning, social connection, and targeted advocacy. None of these goals can be achieved without longterm organizational health and transparency—areas where the Secretary plays an essential role. My experience in Extension has given me a deep appreciation for proper documentation and the trust it builds with our members. I believe the Secretary is more than just a note-taker; they are the person who ensures the National Board stays connected to the membership through honest and transparent communication.

If you were elected, what would be your top priority/goal for your term? My primary goal would be to ensure the board operates effectively by maintaining accurate records and minutes. I would like to build upon the work our current Secretary has done to better serve our membership, learn the business side of NEAFCS, and see if there are ways to make our processes simpler and better for everyone. Serving on the National Board is a responsibility I don't take lightly, so I aim to lead by example.

Vice President for Member Resources - Danielle Day, Iowa

Why would you like to be a candidate for this office?  I am seeking the role of Vice President for Member Resources because I genuinely believe NEAFCS is at its best when members feel connected, supported, and seen. My own experience with NEAFCS has reinforced how powerful it is to belong to a professional community that offers encouragement, opportunity, and shared purpose. Serving in this role feels like a natural way to give back to an association that has shaped my growth as both a professional and a leader. Throughout my Extension and association leadership journey, my focus has consistently centered on people. I care deeply about helping professionals feel welcomed, confident, and equipped to engage, whether they are new to Extension, stepping into leadership, or continuing long standing involvement. Member Resources speaks directly to that commitment by creating pathways for connection, mentorship, leadership development, and meaningful participation.  Professionally, I have more than a decade of experience in Extension, serving in county, regional, and statewide roles. As a Health and Human Sciences Educator with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, I mentor and support educators across the state in mental health, disaster response, and family wellbeing work. This role has strengthened my skills in listening, relationship building, clear communication, and systems that support people doing meaningful work together. My involvement with NEAFCS has given me a strong understanding of member experiences and affiliate needs. I have served in multiple Iowa affiliate leadership roles, including President, Treasurer, and Vice President for Member Resources, and currently serve as Immediate Past President. I have also served on national committees that focus on leadership, mentorship, and engagement. These experiences have shown me how valuable it is when members feel informed, encouraged, and invited into participation rather than unsure about where or how to connect. My leadership style is relationship centered and collaborative. I value approachability, clarity, and follow through, and I believe the strongest associations are built on trust, communication, and shared ownership. If elected, my focus would be on strengthening mentorship and leadership pathways, supporting committees so their work feels purposeful and manageable, and helping members clearly see the many ways they can engage and contribute to NEAFCS. I am prepared for the time commitment and responsibilities of national board service and approach this opportunity with professionalism, care, and respect for NEAFCS policies and governance. Most importantly, I bring a genuine desire to support our members and help ensure NEAFCS continues to feel like a professional home for educators across the country.

If you were elected, what would be your top priority/goal for your term? If elected as Vice President for Member Resources, my top priority would be to continue cultivating the strong work already underway to deepen member connection, mentorship, leadership development, and meaningful engagement across NEAFCS. I see this role as one grounded in stewardship and vision, building intentionally on the strategic direction and momentum established by current and past leaders, while helping NEAFCS continue to grow as a professional home that supports members personal and professional growth throughout every stage of their career journey. I envision an experience where members feel welcomed, supported, and able to clearly see how NEAFCS resources connect and evolve with them over time. Mentorship, both formal and informal, is central to this vision, especially when it creates space for professionals at different stages of their careers to learn from one another, share wisdom, and grow together. When leadership pathways, publications, recognition programs, and engagement opportunities are woven together with purpose, members are better able to find their place, deepen their involvement, and remain connected to the profession in meaningful ways throughout their life. Within this network of support and opportunity, I’d like to strengthen the connection to the NEAFCS Endowment which serves as one of the resources that helps nurture innovation, leadership growth, and emerging initiatives, ensuring the association remains relevant, resilient, and forward-focused as the Family and Consumer Sciences profession continues to evolve. My leadership philosophy is rooted in cultivation, creating environments where people, ideas, and systems are supported with care and intention so they can grow sustainably. As Vice President for Member Resources, I would focus on listening closely to members, strengthening relationships, and supporting committees and leaders as they shape experiences that reflect both the values and the future of NEAFCS. Ultimately, my goal is for members to feel informed, valued, and connected, and for NEAFCS to continue serving as a welcoming and trusted professional home where growth is encouraged, contributions are honored, and engagement remains meaningful at every stage of a member’s career.

Why would you like to be a candidate for this office? I am energized by learning, creative problem-solving, and motivating and serving others. I believe serving as your Vice President of Professional Development will allow me to share that energy in support of NEAFCS and its members. At the heart of Extension is education, and one of the greatest strengths of NEAFCS is how it supports its members as educators. It is the opportunity to learn through research based professional development webinars, sessions, and meetings that supports our growth as educators and reminds us of the importance of what we bring to communities. It is the opportunity to collaborate with others that sparks new ideas and motivates us to be better in our work. It is the encouragement to grow in leadership that allows us to find our voice and believe in our ability to make a difference. Professional development is one of the core tenets of the mission, vision, and values of NEAFCS, and I would be honored to hold a role that supports and moves our professional development purpose forward. As a two-time Annual Session Liaison (surprise!), I had an opportunity to utilize creative problem-solving skills as we navigated a Covid resurgence and movement to a virtual platform in 2021, and a new regional model of annual session planning in 2025. When faced with new hurdles, new systems, and unexpected changes, my immediate reaction is to think, "There is a way -- we just need to figure it out." I experience satisfaction and accomplishment from trying something new, solving a complicated problem, or even addressing a "crisis" in the moment. As we move forward with a revised handbook for Annual Session, I look forward to the challenges and opportunities a new model will bring. In many ways, it is the "we've got this" mindset that emerges as a motivator for others who I work with, and it is also how 1 serve others. I truly believe in new possibilities, new ideas, and continuous improvement in everything I am a part of. It is important to me to listen first for understanding before speaking. I then make an effort to communicate in a positive, clear, and collaborative manner. The NEAFCS creed speaks of meeting the needs and goals of our communities through a learning partnership. I love the phrase "learning partnership". It speaks to an association that is inclusive and affirming of all perspectives, all cultures, and places a person in a leadership position learning alongside those whom they lead. That is how I want to be as a leader, and how I want to encourage others to grow through the professional development opportunities in NEAFCS.

If you were elected, what would be your top priority/goal for your term? I think there are two levels of top priorities - the immediate and specific priorities versus the broader priorities. Taking the broader perspective, in keeping with my values around servant leadership, it is really important to me to make sure as a board member I am always connecting, listening, and learning alongside our members. I want to be visible and accessible. I want to center the needs of our members as we consider professional development opportunities, methods of delivery, content, and accessibility. I think it is important to reflect on both current practices as well as new ideas for the future, making sure we are making decisions based on expressed needs and wants instead of just habit or the excitement of change. From a more immediate perspective, I understand the importance of the annual session liaisons having strong support from the board, particularly when navigating new procedures, and I would prioritize my support for that process.

Eastern Region Director - Shauna Henley, Maryland

Why would you like to be a candidate for this office? I started my Extension career in Jan. 2014, I’ve been our state Affiliate’s Treasurer and President, and liaison to help host the 2023 Annual Session. It was during my time working on the Annual Session that I had the opportunity to work closely with other Affiliates, the National Office, and the Executive Board, where I really enjoyed the conversations and the collaborations to support the larger NEAFCS membership. Running for the Eastern Regional Director will allow me to continue these conversations and collaborations between the Eastern Affiliate Presidents and members, and to advocate for their needs and interests to the National Board. I believe in the NEAFCS Mission, and feel I’m in a place in my career to support the Vision, and demonstrate our Values, with a transparent and inclusive approach towards collaboration, professional development, and leadership for our members.

If you were elected, what would be your top priority/goa l for your term? The Eastern Region is smaller than the other regions in terms of membership and active state affiliations. I would like to understand the current “health” of the respective affiliates, how we can grow membership within, and whether there is a path for less active states to reinvigorate their state affiliations. I know the Eastern Region wasn’t able to host a 2027 Annual Session, so I think about how I can help support the next round of bids for the Eastern Region to host an Annual Session in the next cycle.

Why would you like to be a candidate for this office? I am pursuing the Western Region Director role to advocate for rural Extension, elevate member engagement, and ensure states like Wyoming-small in number but significant in impact-have a strong and respected voice.

If you were elected, what would be your top priority/goal for your term? My top priority would be to build on the strong momentum within the Western Region by strengthening engagement and representation across all states, while ensuring rural and geographically diverse areas like Wyoming have a strong voice. I am committed to expanding opportunities for connection, leadership development, and recognition, while encouraging members to step into leadership and share the impact of Extension in their communities.
