Many children ages 0-5 attend childcare, and are susceptible to foodborne illness, which may be accompanied by an increased risk of long-term complications. Childcare providers furnish the bulk of children’s nutrient intake, yet there is a lack of food safety education requirements for training. Safe Food = Healthy Kids is a comprehensive food safety curriculum for childcare providers. Educational topics include cleaning and sanitizing, cooking, and storing food as well as common allergens, personal hygiene and more. This curriculum is available for free to Extension Educators working in food safety to educate childcare providers in their state. Food Safety education for childcare providers is critical to ensure safe meals and snacks are being provided to children, who are susceptible to foodborne illness. Learn about the Safe Food = Healthy Kids free curriculum, including best practices for food safety at childcare and how to implement in your state.
